Argentina Privatizes Route Maintenance to Save Costs

The Government of Argentina has made the decision to improve the communication routes connecting the different provinces and reaching the City of Buenos Aires, through which millions of people circulate daily. To carry out this task, the national government has announced the privatization of the maintenance of more than 8,500 kilometers of national roads, located in several of the 24 provinces of the country. This measure aims to generate new concessions for private capital and achieve an estimated saving of 6.1 billion dollars in national Treasury expenditures.

In the new system, there will be no type of subsidy from the public sector, which previously made contributions to sustain a deficit concession scheme that did not provide tangible benefits to users.

The privatization of road maintenance consists of the "total privatization of Corredores Viales S.A. under the modality of public works concession by toll." The Ministry of Economy is delegated the authority to initiate the phased bidding process of the Federal Concessions Network, which involves bidding for 11 sections of more than 8,500 kilometers of national roads.

The Ministry of Economy is responsible for modifying the configuration of the works, as well as excluding or incorporating divisions in the sections and corresponding routes, according to specific needs.

The concession system will allow the termination of existing contracts and the closure of the company Corredores Viales S.A., which had a negative result exceeding $142 billion in 2023. Vialidad Nacional will supervise and control current and future concession contracts to ensure compliance for the benefit of users and the development of road infrastructure.

With this plan, the Argentine government seeks to provide better service to users, reduce public spending by more than 6.1 billion dollars, and modernize the country's road network. The measure also aims to ensure safety in circulation on national roads, involving Vialidad Nacional in detailed control of their condition.
